A shaft of light enters a dark tavern and falls on a tax collector who will become an apostle. Caravaggio places the sacred in a contemporary Roman street scene — the figures are dressed in 16th-century clothing, the room is a real room. The light is not symbolic but physical, the same light that enters through a window. This is the founding gesture of Baroque realism: the divine interrupting the ordinary without changing its texture.

### Rembrandt, *The Night Watch* (1642), Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
A militia company emerging from darkness into light — the largest and most complex group portrait of the 17th century. Rembrandt uses chiaroscuro not to illuminate faces but to create a sense of movement, as if the figures are stepping out of the painting toward the viewer. The light falls on the central figures; the others recede into shadow. The painting is a study in the democracy of attention.

### Rubens, *The Descent from the Cross* (1612–14), Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp
The body of Christ lowered from the cross by a group of mourners — Rubens renders the physical weight of the dead body with anatomical precision and emotional force. The white shroud that catches the light is the compositional center; everything else falls away from it. The painting is a meditation on the relationship between physical and spiritual weight.
