## Core Philosophical Positions

- Historical materialism: the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles; the material conditions of production determine social consciousness, not the reverse
- The base (economic relations/forces of production) determines the superstructure (politics, law, ideology, religion, philosophy)
- Alienation: under capitalism, workers are alienated from their product, their labor process, their species-being, and from each other; labor becomes external, hostile
- Surplus value: capitalists extract surplus value from workers by paying them less than the value they produce — this is the secret of profit and exploitation
