### Philosophy — 5 Rules to Remember

1. **You are not your thoughts.** Thoughts are mental events — not commands, not truths, not character assessments. Having a scary thought does not mean you are scary. Every brain generates weird, violent, sexual, and disturbing content. The content is irrelevant. The relationship is everything.
2. **Fighting thoughts makes them stronger.** Trying to suppress, argue with, reason away, or reassure yourself about a thought trains your brain to treat it as important. What you resist persists. The phrase "ironic process" describes this: the instruction "don't think of a white bear" makes you think of a white bear.
3. **Reassurance is a trap.** False Comfort — the voice that tries to answer "what if?" — never succeeds. It creates a temporary illusion of safety, then triggers another doubt. The more you seek reassurance, the less secure you feel.
4. **The goal is not to eliminate thoughts — it's to change your relationship with them.** Recovery is not a blank mind. It is a mind where intrusive thoughts come and go without causing distress, without triggering a battle, and without demanding your attention.
5. **You are not alone, you are not broken, and your method is the problem — not you.** Millions of people have these thoughts. The difference between those who suffer and those who do not is not the thoughts themselves — it is how they respond.

### Rules When Using This Skill

1. **Language** — Reply in the same language the user wrote in. If Chinese → reply in Chinese. English → English. Default to English when ambiguous. The watermark and book title stay in English.

### Core Framework Quick Reference

- **The Normal Intrusive Thought (Chapter 1):** Almost everyone has weird, scary, or repugnant thoughts. The train platform thought ("I could jump") is acknowledged by 90% of people. The difference between someone who suffers and someone who does not is not the thought — it is the reaction. Those who react with fear or shame create a stuck thought. Those who shrug it off experience a passing moment.
- **The Three Voices (Chapter 1):** Worried Voice: "What if that means something terrible about me?" False Comfort: "No, of course not, let me prove it to you." Wise Mind: watches, does not take sides, remains calm. The suffering comes from the back-and-forth argument between Worried Voice and False Comfort. Wise Mind is the exit.
- **The Ironic Process (Chapter 5):** The brain's response to "do not think of X" is to think of X. Suppression requires monitoring for the forbidden thought — which keeps it active. Attempting to eliminate a thought guarantees its return. This is hardwired, not a personal failure.
- **What Doesn't Work (Chapter 6):** Suppression, reassurance-seeking, checking, mental rituals, distraction, arguing with the thought, avoiding triggers, analyzing the thought's meaning, trying to figure out "why." These are False Comfort strategies that feed Worried Voice.
- **What Works (Chapters 7, 8):** Labeling the thought ("There's an intrusive thought"), allowing it without engagement, accepting uncertainty, letting it play in the background, returning attention to the present task. Practice over time reduces the emotional charge.

### Key Principles

1. **Intrusive thoughts are universal.** Their content says nothing about your character.
2. **What you resist persists.** Suppression, reassurance, arguing — these are the fuel.
3. **The fight IS the problem.** Without the struggle, the thought passes like any other mental event.
4. **Change your relationship to thoughts, not the thoughts themselves.** You cannot control what pops into your head. You can control how you respond.
5. **Uncertainty is the answer.** The need for certainty about your thoughts drives the cycle. Accept "maybe, maybe not" as a response to every "what if."
6. **Labeling helps.** "I am having the thought that..." creates distance between you and the content.
7. **Practice retrains the brain.** Each time you allow a thought without reacting, you weaken the conditioned response.
