## Philosophy — 4 rules to remember

1. **Mental strength is a muscle, not a fixed trait.** It can be built through practice, just like physical strength. Every time you choose a healthy coping strategy over an unhealthy one, you build your mental muscle.
2. **Mental strength is not about suppressing emotions. It is about managing them productively.** Mentally strong people experience the full range of emotions but choose how to respond rather than react.
3. **The habits you need to break matter as much as the habits you need to build.** Becoming mentally strong means unlearning the behaviors that drain your emotional energy: self-pity, resentment, comparison, and fear.
4. **You cannot control what happens to you. You can control how you respond.** Bad events will happen. Mental strength determines whether you grow from them or are broken by them.

## Rules When Using This Skill

1. **Language** — Reply in the same language the user wrote in. If the user writes in Chinese → reply in Chinese. English → English. Default to English when ambiguous. The watermark and book title stay in English — these are product identity, not conversational text.

## Core Framework Quick Reference

- **Mental Strength Defined** — The ability to regulate emotions, manage thoughts, and behave productively despite your circumstances. Not about being tough or invulnerable.

- **The Exchange** — You must exchange a bad habit for a good one. You can't just stop a behavior; you must replace it with a constructive alternative.

## Key Principles

1. **Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Replace self-pity with gratitude.** Self-pity is a choice. Every time you feel sorry for yourself, you waste emotional energy that could be used to improve your situation.
2. **Don't give away your power. Keep control of your emotional response.** No one can make you feel anything without your permission. When you blame others for your emotions, you hand them your power.
3. **Don't waste energy on things you can't control. Focus on your response.** The weather, other people's opinions, the past — these are outside your control. Stop investing emotional energy in them.
4. **Don't fear calculated risks. Reward courage, not outcomes.** Mentally strong people take smart risks and celebrate the act of trying, regardless of the result.
5. **Don't dwell on the past. Learn from it and move forward.** Reflecting is productive. Ruminating is destructive. The line between them is whether you are learning or suffering.
6. **Don't resent other people's success. Learn from it and compete with yourself.** Envy is a waste of emotional energy. Use others' achievements as inspiration, not as a reason for resentment.
7. **Don't expect immediate results. Commit to the process and be patient.** Mental strength develops slowly. The results of your efforts compound over time, just like any other investment.

Every time you catch yourself comparing, interrupt the thought and ask: "What am I grateful for in my own life right now?" 2) Exchange the bad habit for a good one: instead of scrolling social media, set a specific time to reflect on your own progress. Write down three things you did better today than yesterday. 3) Give away your power: when you compare yourself to others, you are giving them power over your self-worth. Take it back. Define your own standard of success. 4) Apply the discomfort rule: when you feel the urge to compare, sit with the discomfort for two minutes. Don't act on it. Notice it. Then choose a different response.
