To build an AI agent with Claude, you give the model a job written in plain English, the tools it needs to do that job, and a trigger that decides when it runs. You do not need the Agent SDK, and you do not need to write Python. Search for "how to build a Claude agent" and you land in a wall of SDK tutorials with ReAct loops and code samples. Search for "build an AI agent without code" and you get a different wall: Gumloop, Relevance AI, Zapier, a dozen platforms that each want you to sign up and rebuild your stack inside them. Most people who want an agent fit in neither bucket. They are not shipping a product on the API, and they do not want a new SaaS tab. They have one annoying weekly task and a Claude subscription they are already paying for. This guide is for them.

What is an AI agent, really?

An AI agent is a model that takes actions on its own, in a loop, until a task is finished. That is the whole idea. A normal chat gives you text and stops. An agent reads your goal, decides on a first step, takes it, looks at what came back, and keeps going until the job is done or it hits something it cannot handle.

Three pieces make it an agent instead of a chatbot. There is the model doing the reasoning. There are tools it can actually call, like reading a file, searching the web, or hitting an API. And there is the loop that ties them together, so a failed step or a surprising result changes what it does next instead of ending the conversation. Anthropic's own Claude Agent SDK is the code version of exactly this loop, and it is the same machinery that runs inside Claude Code. Do you need to code to build a Claude agent?

How to build an AI agent with Claude, step by step

Start with one job and make it boring. Here is the path from idea to a working agent.

  1. Pick one task you already do. Not "manage my finances." Something like "every Monday, pull last week's Stripe payments and write a three-line summary." The narrower it is, the better it works, because you can tell when it succeeds and when it lies.

  2. Write the instructions down once. In Claude Code this is a skill, a plain markdown file called SKILL.md that holds the steps in the order you would do them.   4. Run it by hand and watch. Trigger the skill yourself, read every step, and correct the instructions where it drifted. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that separates an agent you trust from one you have to babysit. Two or three rounds of "no, do it this way" is normal.

  5. Put it on a trigger. An agent that you have to start by hand is just a saved prompt. The thing that makes it an agent in practice is that it runs without you. A schedule is the simplest trigger: run this skill every Monday at 8am, send me the result. Now it works while you do something else.

What makes Claude a good base for an agent?

Claude brings a few things that matter once an agent is loose and acting on real data. It follows multi-step instructions without losing the thread halfway through, which is what keeps a five-step skill from collapsing on step three. It has a large context window, so it can hold a long document or a messy thread and still reason over the whole thing. And it has native tool use, so calling a tool is a first-class move rather than a hack bolted on after the fact.

The other thing, less glamorous and more important, is that Claude Code already solved the plumbing. The agent loop, the tool execution, the context management, the place to store your skills, all of it ships in the box. You are not assembling an agent from parts. You are handing an existing agent a job description.

How is this different from a no-code agent builder?
